This was too good to be true! It&#8217;s also a great time to be in those areas because they days are warm but not scorching summer hot. We found the best Airbnb right in downtown Fruita that made all the mountain biking and running from the front door easy. Two things we love! And easy access to the coffee shops and bike shops (1 block away to be exact). And Reid (not shown, because I was too busy biking)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Just north of Fruita is 18 Road which is known for its mountain biking and has a ton of camping. The trails progress nicely from easy to intermediate to more advanced so it has a little something for everyone. It was our friend&#8217;s Reid and Christy&#8217;s birthdays on Friday! So naturally we went for a ride with Reid in the morning and met Christy and the lady crew at the wineries in Palisade. This part of CO is very interesting to me because it is pure dry desert and then has lush valleys where peaches and vineyards grow. AND there&#8217;s mountain biking not far, so it makes a great weekend destination. We started with the Lunch Loops trails in Grand Junction to celebrate Reid, and this network is the most difficult out of them all. And I was challenged! Coming from flowy trails in Park City to CO desert tech took some getting used to. I rode these for the first time last year and was pleasantly surprised how much easier they were this year! PBR is named for Pumps, Berms and Rollers and is really fun and flowy. The new challenge this year was trying not to pedal at all! It can be done keeping the right speed and pumping the bike at the right spots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe&#8217;s Ridge gives me the heebie-jeebies because of a steep and exposed downhill. I remembered it from last year and was already getting a little anxious as we started the ride, but thankfully to group support and Tom saying &#8220;don&#8217;t stop!&#8221; as I got to the top of the downhill, it was a little bit easier (mentally) making it down this time. Thankfully I&#8217;ve become pretty good at feathering my breaks. I&#8217;ve ridden here twice before so it&#8217;s always a good spot to see progress and get acquainted with a little more tech. We started at the easy green of Rustler&#8217;s Ridge (one of my very first bike rides ever!) and I made it through the whole thing without walking! Minus one tiny part where I got a little too close to a tree, haha. Tom then took Whit and me up Mary&#8217;s and over the Wrangler to work on our slab uphill push and get awesome views looking into the Colorado River valley. Wranglers has a little more techy spots for me to work on and thanks to following Whit through them, we got through! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The following weekend was Moab weekend! This place has become extremely popular the last few years so we didn&#8217;t really go into town much and stayed on the outskirts at our campsite. Despite the crowds, we were able to find a sweet group spot away from everyone with our own little rock feature to scramble up for sunset. I&#8217;ve only ridden in Moab once, so it was fun to get a little more familiar this time and boy, is the slick rock a mind twist! It&#8217;s really grippy and sometimes slopey so it took me a while to wrap my head around the fact that I wasn&#8217;t going to slip off. Top Rock was a black\/ blue followed by Ramblin&#8217; which is a blue\/black. We also started at the hottest part of the day and the harder trail so we were getting a little discouraged. A lot of hike-a-bike up the really steep rock after loosing momentum through the sand and walking some downhill tech features. Thankfully the Ramblin&#8217; trail was far less difficult and mostly downhill, which we thoroughly enjoyed. They say riding in Moab will make you a better rider, and they&#8217;re not kidding! The terrain didn&#8217;t change so drastically from hard to soft, there was still a good amount of slick rock but less slopey, and not so steepy uphills and downhills. This is another trail that really fun to see progress on. There was a nice techy uphill I walked all of last year, and this year I made it up a good ways! And a tricky downhill that I struggled on before, I went through without even thinking about it this time. Awww, what accomplishments. The full Dead Horse Point loop has a right (easy) and a left loop (harder). Last year we did the entire 14 mile loop but this year, it was so windy and a lot of us were pretty beat after a full weekend of biking that we called it after the easy loop.
