We were not disappointed! It gave us all the awe-inspiring feels we got in the Argentina side of Patagonia, and it’s right here! We asked our friend Michael for recommendations because there are 1000 + possibilities and he’s thru-hiked the PCT a few times, so we figured he knew the best. I’ve never been in the PNW outside of Seattle and Tacoma, it was so cool seeing how mossy and green everything is. And how big and tall the trees are! The trail started in the dense woods and boy, I could feel the humidity. After about 4.5 miles up we popped out of the trees and started our fun ridgy scramble/ hike to the top of Trappers Peak. The views were amazing! It was also cool seeing Thornton Lake below, which is where we were headed next. We started at the Cascade Pass trail head which was a semi-highly trafficed trail, but for good reason. Once we got up to Cascade Pass, we instantly found some great views of the Cascades and they just kept getting better. We made our way up to Sahale Glacier Camp which is said to be one of the most beautiful campsites of the national parks. Agreed! It’s a long hike up but the views are just amazing! We didn’t camp there but we sure enjoyed our day hike and views. We passed a few people at their tents, put on crampons and traverse across the glacier to hit the peak. We were making our way up the really scrambly part, I wasn’t really into because every single thing you used as a hand or foot hold had to be tested before pulling/ stepping on it to ensure it was solid. Apparently a lot of rock on this area isn’t, so I was over that pretty quick. We started making our way down the scramble and Tom realized we were actually summiting something other than Sahale Peak, which we learned was a super easy hike up to so I gladly made my way there. And OMG, those views! We’ve seen peaks on peaks in the Rockies, but this was a whole other thing. It was really awe-inspiring to see something like this so close to home. We traveled to Patagonia (which was unbelievable) and The North Cascades are on par in our opinion!

After getting our fill of views we started making our way down the 7 miles we hiked up. But to make it a touch easier, we glissaded down a bit of the glacier which made for a fast and fun mini decent! My butt was frozen, but it sure is invigorating and brings back a little bit of that good ole childhood play. On our way down we were told there was a mama black bear and her cub ahead of us just off the trail. I was a little scared because well, I’m just scared of bears. Thankfully mama bear was just far enough off the trail that we were able to continue on without interruption, she also didn’t seem to care at all that we were there. As soon as the little cub saw us, he darted straight into the trees.. good job little buddy! We also saw a family of mountain goats running across the mountain as we ate lunch and the most majestic marmot we’ve ever seen. And the wildflowers! All in all, it was an unbelievable epic day.

We took a few days off because the rain was rolling through. We stayed in a hotel one night to shower and have a little more space. We decided to hike Mt. Adams, which has been on Tom’s list for a long time, so on our route there we stopped at Mt. Rainier to see what all the fuss was about. Well, we didn’t see much. The PNW weather was still strong and we really just saw a bunch of clouds. Kind of a bummer, but we were due for some bad-ish weather. We did a mini hike down at the bottom of Mt. Rainier National Park and saw some amazingly large, old trees! The Redwoods was already on my list of places to go, but now it really is!

view of our peak in the distance

first glimpse of morning

Instead of having the full 13 mile roundtrip hike of Mt. Adams, we decided to shorten it a touch and hike in 2 miles to camp the night before. We both had to motivate each other because the whole thing just seemed like a lot of effort, but once we set up camp and saw our summit for the next day, we started to get excited! We woke up at 3 the next morning and hit the trail by 4 to ensure the snow wouldn’t be too soft to hike up. It’s always an interesting and invigorating feeling hiking when it’s pitch black. We made our way up and hit what’s called The Lunch Counter (which is a higher camp) as the sun started rising. A little more hiking on volcanic rock and then it was time for crampons! It was pretty crazy how many people were hiking up, I never would have suspected it was such a popular hike, but it is. None the less, we made our way up the false summit, had a little breather and a snack and kept going to the tippy top. The views were crazy! We could see Mt. Hood, Mt. Rainier and Mt. Saint Helens peaking above the clouds. Thankfully after a few days of rain, our weather window was perfect for this summit! It was extremely windy at top so we found a little shelter to eat lunch and warm up a bit. There’s also a little building that is completely frozen over! It’s like something totally (and literally) frozen in time.

hello Mt. Rainier! Nice to finally see you

From there we made our way back to the false summit and had the longest glissade of our lives! There were three different segments, I don’t even know how long they were but I though my pants were going to have a hole burned into them by the time I was done sliding on my butt. Thankfully that didn’t happen. But the shoots were basically like a bobsled track with little berms curving through and some bumps to speed you up and slow you down. It was SO much fun! We did the long haul back to camp, chilled for a bit, let everything dry out and packed up. I’m so glad we hiked in even just 2 miles the day before because it made our packs just a tad lighter for the big summit and allowed us an extra hour of sleep. Another epic day in the books!

view of Mt.
